With a 23 per cent market share, and 35,500 wind turbines installed, Vestas is the world’s
leading supplier of wind power solutions. Vestas installed its first wind turbine in 1979 and has
since played an active role in the fast-moving wind power industry. From being a pioneer in the
industry with a staff of approximately 60 in 1987, it is today a global, market-leading group with
over 15,000 people employed. Vestas is the leading producer of high technological wind power

Working within Vestas Sales and Contracting division, PPS were engaged to design a Microsoft
Office Project planning infrastructure to be used by all Business Project Managers and the
Project Management Office (PMO) for creating, publishing and reporting on Project Schedules
in a consistent and effective manner. The key requirements for this infrastructure was to be
able to:-

• Obtain a management overview of multiple projects within one tool.
• Allow Department Managers to understand which resources were overloaded on which
• Ensure project schedules were working in line with Danish, Swedish, Polish and UK
public holiday calendars.
• Log personal holidays within the system so that work could not be scheduled against
resources on holiday or unavailable for work.
• Have clear visibility of project timelines and key milestones.

The Planning Infrastructure designed and adopted by the PMO included a standard template
which included the generic milestones, standardised working time calendars for the four
countries concerned, a centralised resource pool containing several hundred generic and
specific resources, advice for resourcing within schedules, baselining and tracking of progress
and the reporting through indicative and automatic Red, Amber and Green progress ratings. A
centralised PMO master plan was then created and linked to the detailed project schedules for
ease of use and reporting.
